All-female choir Philomela to perform in Shanghai

When: Aug 9, 2010 3:00 pm

Helsinki-based choir Philomela has charmed audiences and critics alike with performances that blend contemporary Nordic choir music with world music and Finnish folk traditions. Under the direction of choir conductor Marjukka Riihimäki, the 40-person-strong choir convey through song the joys and sorrows of woman’s life.

The choir is known for blending theatrical elements into the musical performances, and embracing movement and the available acoustic space to present a multidimensional and touching experience for the audience. For material, Philomela regularly commissions new music, particularly from composers who take elements from Finnish folk tradition and creatively combine the elements with their own musical ideas. Several of Philomela’s pieces include also choreographies by professional dancer and visual director Päivi Järvinen.

During its 25-year career Philomela has toured in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Japan, the United States, Zambia and Taiwan in addition to many European countries. Philomela will perform at the Shanghai World Expo on the 9th and 10th of August at Europe Square at 3 pm and 4 pm. Philomela will also give a performance on the 12th of August at the Concert Hall of NCPA Chorus Festival in Beijing.
