Tanssi / Dance Exhibition

Tanssi / Dance – Exhibition on Finnish Art related to dance

23.9. – 17.10.2010 Downstream Garage, Shanghai

Organized as part of the first Shanghai Dance and Media Festival, Tanssi / Dance exhibition explores the themes of movement and dance with artworks by Finnish contemporary artists.

During the past twenty years, contemporary dance and media art have developed hand in hand. Tanssi / Dance exhibition examines this close relationship and the ties between the two art forms through photographs, interactive art and video. Among the selection of works shown are photographs by Elina Brotherus, interactive installation by Hanna Haaslahti and video by Aurora Reinhard.

Two solo dance performances accompany the exhibition during the opening week of the festival. Vera Nevanlinna’s adaptation of Deborah Hay’s choreography ‘News’ combines contemporary dance with live sound created by a microphoned paper dress. In ‘Animal motion’, Sari Palmgren’s choreography transfers the stage into a research field for dance and video, art and science, man and animals.

Tanssi / Dance Exhibition is organized in collaboration with Dance Info Finland and Shanghai Dance and Media Festival with the support of Ministry of Education and Culture (Finland), Downstream Garage (Shanghai), Zodiak – Center for New Dance (Helsinki) and Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma (Helsinki).

Joik singer Wimme Saari tours China

When: Sep 26, 2010 12:00 am

The vocal chanting of Wimme Saari embraces traditions and infuses contemporary soundscapes to create a modern take on Sámi joik, the deeply personal and spiritual singing of the indigenous people of Northern Europe.

Reindeer-herding Sámi people’s form of singing is reminiscent of the traditional chanting of Native American cultures, namely because of the shared affinity with nature. One of the most acclaimed representatives of the genre, Wimme Saari, will perform at Chinese venues after touring extensively in Europe.

Wimme collaborates regularly with various artists and has appeared as a guest vocalist on the albums of Hector Zazou, Hedningarna, Nits and RinneRadio. On the tour in China, Wimme performs with Tapani Rinne (clarinet) and Juuso Hannukainen (percussion) from RinneRadio and Matti Wallenius on acoustic string instruments.

Wimme Saari is one of the worlds most renowned Sámi singers. Since 1995, Wimme has released four band albums and a traditional solo joik album. Early 2010, Wimme released the critically acclaimed album ”Mun” that peaked at number three in World Music Charts Europe.
