Finnish design on show at the World Expo

The theme of Expo 2010, ‘Better City – Better Life’, provides an opportunity to introduce the highlights of Finnish expertise in the fields of built environment and product design to the Chinese audience.

The Finnish participation in the World Expo and pavilion Kirnu bear the slogan ‘Sharing Inspiration’. Finnish companies have developed proven, innovative solutions for sustainable development, environmental friendliness, energy efficiency and well-being. The World Expo in Shanghai gives the possibility to showcase these solutions to a wide audience in one of the world’s key emerging markets.

The design exhibit at Kirnu has been designed by the Helsinki-based Muotohiomo design agency. The display is a diverse snapshot of Finnish homes and the daily life: the tour begins in the front hall and its furnishings, and continues through the kitchen and living room into the sauna – of course! The displays include accessories designer Aki Choklat’s updated take on the traditional felt boots as well as Iittala’s timeless tableware; world-famous tools from Fiskars; as well as items designed by Finland’s best-known contemporary designers Eero Aarnio and Harri Koskinen.

Finnish pavilion also highlights health and well-being, know-how, education and technology, with Nokia phones, as will Kone lifts as examples of technological achievements. Particular focus has been placed on well-being, and the special needs of children and the elderly. Finnish companies are world leaders in many fields, including dental care. In the exhibition, Chinese visitors will familiarize themselves with Finnish landscape, culture and the way of life via a huge interactive screen.

The outstanding quality of Finnish design has also brought Helsinki the honor of being chosen as World Design Capital 2012. The year’s theme will be Open Helsinki – Embedding Design in Life. The message is clear: in Finland, design is for everybody!

Aalto Lab Shanghai

When: May 26, 2010 12:00 am

During the Shanghai World Expo, Aalto University in collaboration with Tongji University and IDEO organize two Aalto LAB Shanghai workshops that will take place both at the Finland Pavilion and at the Aalto-Tongji Design Factory.

Aalto LAB is a program concept created by the Aalto University with the aim of making the world a better place to live. Aalto LAB unites universities, companies and society together to work on societal issues in order to create concrete impact on the specifically chosen theme.

The foundation of Aalto LAB is based on creating sustainable future with the underlying theme being the notion of sharing. Sharing in this context is based the comprehension of the emerging green economy in which resources such as energy, knowledge, matter, time, skill, software, space, or food will be shared. Aalto LAB focuses on realizing the dream of sustainability by creating radical new innovations.

In the context of China, Aalto LAB takes the initiative on the idea of reinventing urban life: rural + urban. Instead of people having to move to major cities, could rural areas be developed and supported in such a way that its’ inhabitants could continue living there; villages would become self-sustainable, the economy would be balanced and also the social structure of the areas would become healthier. In the case of Shanghai, Aalto LAB focuses on a small village at the Chongming Island.

The ultimate aim of Aalto LAB is to create concrete impacts and to support social entrepreneurship. Through the program a long-term effect is hopefully initiated, engaging the local people to carry out the development and progress.

Aalto LAB also aims for acting as a bridge builder between people, topical issues, ideas and the society. Thus Aalto LAB is making the world a better place by creating multidisciplinary collaboration.

Aalto University is proud to realize the first international Aalto LAB with Tongji University and IDEO.

The two workshops will take place at the Kirnu pavillion  26th and 27th May.

A Sino-Finnish Cooperation Platform Is Opened in Shanghai

Finnish Aalto University and Chinese Tongji University have established a new cooperation platform in Shanghai called Aalto-Tongji Design Factory. It’s focusing on innovative design, research and cooperation. The space has been designed and built during this spring and it will be opened May 25th in Zhangwu Campus of Tongji University.

Aalto-Tongji Design Factory is the first concrete step towards a broader cooperation between the two universities. On the opening day, the President of Aalto University Tuula Teeri and the President of Tongji University Pei Gang will sign an agreement of realizing the Sino-Finnish Centre, a dynamic platform for Sino-Finnish cooperation. “This is one small step for two universities, and one giant leap for moth humankind and kind humans”, says president Pei.

The mission of the cooperation is to build a better world to live in. “We want to change the world” say both Presidents. They agree that the 21st century will undoubtedly be a century of design and innovation. The new era needs new approaches of human centered innovation. “To achive this and go even further, international, transcultural and interdisciplinary collaboration is of utmost importance” say Teeri and Pei.

The Important and Concrete Aims

China is one of the world’s most rapidly developing economies and market areas. “Made in China” has evolved into a self-explanatory concept, but the aim of China is to transform the concept into “Created in China”. The common aim of Aalto University and Tongji University is to develop into world-class universities as well as to support sustainable development of their societies and the growth of the innovation competence in key areas. Both parties are committed to concrete action, which is proven by the realization of Aalto-Tongji Design Factory in only a few months’ time. “Our aims are ambitious and we are expecting both short-term and long-term benefits”, states President Tuula Teeri.

Aalto-Tongji Design Factory

The working environment of 1000 sq.m. which is opened today will be developed from the principles of Aalto University’s Design Factory in Finland in its operations in the Chinese cultural environment. The most important aim is to promote education, research and interaction with other actors of the society which is related to development of innovative products and services. Students, researchers and the representatives of industry and commerce will cooperate to practice and develop methods for creative problem solving, prototyping, practical experimenting and creating a better user experience.

The Interdisciplinary Future

The basic idea of Aalto University the interaction between technology and science, art, design and economics. These are essential in the functions of the Factory. Aalto-Tongji Design Factory which is now opened has generated great interest in advance among both Chinese and Finnish university people. The 82 Aalto students who traveled through Siberia all the way from Finland to Shanghai World Expo will meet their Chinese colleagues in the various workshops and free program organized during the opening week. Many companies operating in Finland and China and especially in Shanghai have already listed as partners in the project.

Wonderful! Nothing like this has happened in China before!” has been heard from many guests who have visited the site in advance. Also the people from Aalto University who have taken part in the project have learned tremenduously about the Chinese society, university and business world and, most of all, the people, new friends and culture”, summarizes the project manager Viljami Lyytikäinen.
