Finland Day was a great success!

The first month of Finnish participation in the World Expo culminated in Expo’s Finland Day on the 27th of May. During the course of the day, the celebrations took over four stages inside the Expo area with performances ranging from heavy metal to contemporary circus.

The day’s events proved hugely popular and drew in the crowds to enjoy the wide array of entertainment. Europe Square outdoor festivities were attended by a record-breaking audience, making the concerts one of Expo’s most popular events so far. Stratovarius and Negative were joined on stage by Turisas, Kimmo Pohjonen, Verneri Pohjola Quartet and The Five Corners Quintet, as well as electronic music acts Villa Nah, DJ collective Top Billin and DJ Jori Hulkkonen. According to the Chinese Expo-organization, the Europe Square event was attended by over 20 000 persons.

Highlights of the day included also the Music Club performances by the Finnish National Ballet and contemporary circus duo Walo & Hakkarainen and the Finland Day gala collaboration of Marimekko and a Chinese dancer-choreographer Jin Xing.

Helsinki Nights:Helfest

When: May 26, 2010 12:00 am

The musical style most often associated with Finland is arguably heavy metal, with bands such as HIM, Nightwish, Children of Bodom and the Eurovision song contest winner Lordi all hailing from the Nordic country. As Helsinki is the home to one of the internationally best known metal festivals, Tuska (Finnish for ‘pain’), it is only fitting that Helsinki will host metal festivals in Shanghai and Beijing respectively. Metal mayhem can be experienced in Shanghai at Helfest on the 26th of May at Mao Livehouse. The four bands performing include power metal band Stratovarius, who are with 2,5 million sold records worldwide one of the most successful Finnish metal bands to date. Folk metal is represented by Turisas, who take their inspiration from the bravery of the historic battles in the North. The groups will be joined by melodic death metal band Before the Dawn and glam rockers Negative, who already have previous Chinese tours under their belt. The metal nights in Shanghai and Beijing are produced in collaboration with Icon Promotions and Pain Killer Magazine.

Helsinki will host a series of club nights reflecting the city’s vibrant music scene. The jazz, metal and electronic clubs will take place in association with the events of Shanghai World Expo’s Finland Day on the 27th May in various venues across the city.
