When: May 27, 2010 12:00 am

The leading choreographers of China and Finland talk about the cultural scene in their native countries, sharing their experiences as internationally acknowledged ambassadors of contemporary dance.

Jin Xing

Jin Xing’s biography as a dancer is as extraordinary as her personal life as the first transsexual recognized by the Chinese government. She studied modern dance technique, among others, at the schools of Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham in New York, and has taught and performed across Europe including La Biennale di Venezia, Dance Umbrella London and Impulstanz Vienna.

Jin Xing is recognized as the most significant choreographer in China and the director of the biggest independent dance group in the country. In 1996 she set up the Beijing Modern Dance Ensemble, the first modern dance troupe in Beijing, and in 2006 she founded the Shanghai Dance Festival as the first independent dance festival in China.

Tero Saarinen

Tero Saarinen’s training in classical, modern, and Japanese butoh dance has yielded a distinctive, original, kinetic signature and has marked him as one of the most significant choreographers of his generation.

The multi-award-winning dancer and choreographer based his own company in 1996 in Helsinki. Today, Tero Saarinen Company is one of Finland’s leading cultural exports; the group has appeared in major venues of almost 40 countries and Saarinen’s choreographies have been licensed also to other prominent dance companies in Europe.

Tero Saarinen Company & Stravinsky Evening

When: May 26, 2010 8:00 pm

Acclaimed modern dance ensemble Tero Saarinen Company pays a visit to Shanghai and the Shanghai Expo with Stravinsky Evening (Petrushka/HUNT) at the Shanghai Centre Theatre on 26th of May. Tero Saarinen Company’s Stravinsky Evening features two powerful contemporary reinterpretations of Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s (1882-1971) classics: Petrushka and The Rite of Spring. Known for his works composed specifically for dance, Stravinsky was perhaps the most influential composer of the 20th century. Major choreographers all over the world have created their own responses to Stravinsky’s scores. Tero Saarinen is now widely considered to be the leading Stravinsky interpreter of his generation. Tero Saarinen Company’s Stravinsky Evening begins with Petrushka, an eternally moving triangle drama accompanied by exquisite live music. The performance ends with HUNT, Saarinen’s intensely powerful solo with its multilayered themes including masculinity and femininity, alienation and the fading of beauty. This masterpiece has moved audiences and critics worldwide: it has won prizes and award nominations equally for its choreography, innovative use of technology, and Tero Saarinen’s unforgettable interpretation.

Additionally, Tero Saarinen will hold for professional dancers the Master Class at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center on the 24th of May. Saarinen will also be attending the Finland Day with an artist meet-and-greet on the 27th of May, courtesy of the City of Turku, the 2011 Capital of Culture.

The Finnish National Ballet visits Shanghai World Expo

The visit to Shanghai includes a performance of Wilfried Jacobs’ new choreography for Ville Matvejeff’s cello concerto.

The Finnish National Ballet takes part in the Shanghai World Expo on Finland Day 27th May with a performance by 11 dancers. The half an hour long cavalcade includes performances from classical ballet to contemporary dance: a pas de deux from the Sleeping Beauty, parts of Jorma Elo’s Suite Murder and a new choreography Crossroads created by the Finnish National Ballet dancer Wilfried Jacobs specially for the performance in Shanghai. The music accompanying Jacobs’ choreography is a cello concerto by Finnish National Ballet pianist Ville Matvejeff. The recording of the concerto that is heard with the choreography is performed by the Finnish National Opera Orchestra with cellist Tuomas Lehto from the Helsinki City Orchestra.

Finland Day on the 27th May presents Finnish culture with more than a hundred artists performing in four different venues of the Expo area. The Finnish National Ballet will perform at the Music Club venue of the Expo Performance Center, with performances of Finnish folk music, jazz, circus arts and dance.

Artist guides at Kirnu

Finnish artists share insights into performing arts and creative thinking at Kirnu, with performances of dance, song, circus, street shows and different musical instruments.

An artist guide combines fact and fiction to share visions through various art forms. In the Expo they act as guides to Finland and their home region. An artist guide is a dancer, performance artist, designer, artisan, visual artist, magician, actor or musician. In other words, a professional artist who interacts with the audience and communicates with the public without speaking.

During May and June, the guides are Northern Savonia’s creative arts development project SARKA and the Kotka-Hamina area’s development company CURSOR. Both are sending four innovative culture professionals to perform for one month. The project was founded in co-operation with local companies and organizations, Partanen & Lamusuo Partnership and Finpro.

First artist guides performing at Kirnu in May are Kirsi Pitkänen, a performance and installation artist and Duo Petra and Simo Sahari, a singer-guitarist duo who perform songs inspired by the Finnish seaport Kotka.

The blog of the artist guides can be followed at www.finlandexpo.blogit.fi (in Finnish).
